Tulips are admired by people around the globe, but one country stands out for its deep affection for the vibrant flower: Holland.
The beauty of tulips is undeniable, and it's hard to find someone who doesn’t fall in love with their colorful, graceful form. However, Holland seems to have a particular fondness for them, a connection that stretches back centuries.
Though tulips did not originate in Holland, they have become a key symbol and major export of the country. In the 16th century, tulips were brought to Holland from the Ottoman Empire. Not long after their arrival, tulips became highly coveted. The flower’s popularity surged after Carolus Clusius published the first significant book on tulips.
At the time, tulip bulbs were so valuable that they were traded for more than gold, with some bulbs selling for ten times the annual income of an average worker. This era became known as “tulip mania.”
Today, while tulips are no longer worth their weight in gold, Holland remains one of the largest producers and exporters of tulips worldwide. The country dedicates about 60% of its land to agriculture and horticulture, with much of it devoted to cultivating flowers. In 2014, over 2 billion tulips were exported globally from the country.
Given the country’s significant role in the global flower trade, it's no surprise that Holland has earned the title of the "Flower Shop of the World." The Netherlands accounts for 44% of the global floricultural trade, with tulips making up a large portion. The country also leads the world in the production of flower bulbs, contributing 77% of all flower bulbs worldwide.
In addition to bulbs, the Dutch also trade flower seeds. In 2014, the country exported $3.8 billion worth of flower seeds. Every year, 65% of the 1,800 new plant varieties introduced to the European market come from Holland.
While the Dutch share their tulips with the world, they also ensure there's plenty left for themselves. Every year, at the end of March, Keukenhof gardens display more than 800 varieties of tulips, totaling around 7 million bulbs. The garden is often regarded as one of the most beautiful spring gardens in the world. In addition to the stunning flower displays, Keukenhof also offers a petting zoo, playground, and maze, making it a perfect destination for families.
If visiting Holland isn't on the agenda, there are numerous tulip festivals around the world that offer a chance to experience the beauty of these iconic flowers as spring approaches.
